Journal Regulations
Art. 1 – Title
Scientia. Journal of the Italian Society for the History of Science (hereinafter referred to as "the Journal") publishes contributions in the history of science, technology, and techniques, reflecting the diverse historiographical approaches developed in recent decades. The Journal is published twice a year in both print and open-access formats.
Art. 2 – Governance Bodies
a) The governance bodies of the Journal include the Managing Editor (preferably the current President of the Italian Society for the History of Science – SISS), the Editorial Directors, the Editorial Committee, and the International Scientific Advisory Board.
b) The Editorial Directorate comprises two or more Editors-in-Chief, one or more Review Editors, and an editorial staff coordinated by one or more Lead Editors.
c) The International Scientific Advisory Board consists of up to 30 scholars, at least half of whom must be affiliated with international research institutions. Its members represent the principal historiographical trends and disciplinary articulations within the history of science and technology. The Board supports the Editorial Directorate in the peer review process and in developing proposals for thematic issues.
d) All candidates for editorial roles are selected and proposed to the Society's membership by the Executive Council of the Italian Society for the History of Science. These appointments must comply with the Statute and Regulations of the SISS and ensure fair gender representation.
e) Each appointment has a term of four years and may be renewed once.
Art. 3 – Collaborations
a) The Journal may acknowledge the collaboration of public or private institutions in the production of one or more issues in cases where financial or material support is provided.
b) The Journal may host proceedings from conferences and publish thematic issues in collaboration with national and international scientific institutions. It may also publish the proceedings of SISS conferences, provided these are subject to the standard peer review process of the Journal.
Art. 4 – Scholarly Contributions
a) The editorial, acceptance, and peer review procedures for scholarly contributions are defined in the Guidelines for Authors and the Editorial Policies issued by the Editorial Directorate. These guidelines are formulated with reference to the Regulations for the Classification of Journals in Non-Bibliometric Areas, issued by the National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes (ANVUR).
b) Articles (accepted in either Italian or English) are subject to peer review. Single-submission articles are reviewed by two independent reviewers, while articles within thematic sections or special issues are reviewed by one or two reviewers. In the case of special issues, the Guest Editor, who is responsible for ensuring the originality of submissions and conducting an initial scholarly assessment.
Submitted articles must not have been previously published. The Editorial Directorate, in coordination with the publisher, is committed to adhering to the principles of good scholarly practice and to establishing clear conditions for publication. Specific instructions and author guidelines—approved by the SISS Executive Council—will be made publicly available on the Journal’s website, along with the Code of Ethics.
The Editorial Directorate is required to convene the International Scientific Advisory Board at least once a year to review the journal's editorial direction and planning. Periodic meetings with the Editorial Committee must also be held.
